The WORK volunteers do at ANADESA:

  • Accompanying the coordinators on home visits.

  • Promotional work:  graphic design, web pages, logos, contact network, etc.

  • Translating documents into English.

  • Teaching English classes during reinforcement classes

  • Writing management documents

  • Assisting with groups visiting ANADESA

  • Explaining the work of ANADESA to visiting groups.

  • Fund management to strengthen the association´s projects.

  • Supporting outside programs

  • Supporting additional activities

The type of work will vary, but the employees will work with you to allow your abilities and personality to be used. As seen above, there are many different types of jobs for our volunteers.  This gives each volunteer the opportunity to share his/her gifts all while learning a new language(s) and culture of Guatemala.

     Accommodation

HERE our volunteers are taken care of.  Each volunteer is set up with a local family in the Santiago area whether in Panabaj or Chuk Muk.  These families are participants in ANADESA whether one the parents is involved in one of the projects or his/her child attends one of the schools ran by ANADESA.
This allows each volunteer to have a much more real Guatemala experience.  Even more importantly, this helps out the families financially as they provide for each volunteer:

  • room & bed(all bedding materials)

  • all 3 meals/day for their guests(volunteers)

  • their support in whatever needs and questions you may have

Lastly, because these family's are with ANADESA, they will want you to be provided for and overall feel safe and cared for.

"It took me a week or so to settle in, but soon the environment was very comfortable.

I was able to teach English a few hours most days, work on the associations website, do home visits, and translate whenever needed.  Being here has shown me what I'm good at and what my weaknesses are.

ANADESA definitely has the right intentions and ideas for helping the community, they just need people

to make those changes happen.  I recommend ANADESA to anyone looking to give back and/or wanting to

unplug from normal everyday society.  It's challenging but a totally growing and worth it experience."

Served 1 month ( 2018)
I worked as a volunteer at ANADESA for a month, and from the first moment there I felt welcome. I wanted to learn as much as possible, and my coworkers always had patience with me and with my questions. I lived with a family in the village of Panabaj, and worked at ANADESA during the day, doing various activities and helping with their projects. I learned a lot about Guatemala’s environment and natural beauty, education, human rights, and the history of indigenous people during Guatemala’s civil war. Although I couldn’t speak T’zutujil, the indigenous language in Santiago Atitlán, I could communicate in Spanish, the language in the middle that connected us. I recommend experiencing Guatemala through the work that ANADESA does in the community, and in the lives of visitors and volunteers. The support and friendship that ANADESA offers to all is a gift of hospitality and hope.
